How to Cope Well with Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is often considered as a lifetime problem, so patients really need a lot of support and to learn coping measures to deal with the different challenges. The response of patients will differ, as well as their personal, mental and emotional ability to handle the new situations. Find out the best approaches that lead to independence and wellness.

Expert Advice

It is important that you consult the professionals first, before determining the proper approaches that lead to a better and healthier lifestyle. You may belong to an online forum or local support group. Start to talk about the situation with others who share the same concerns and sentiments with you. It is important to know that patients’ reactions can differ depending on their own personal experiences and capabilities.

Find out the most reliable ways and coping measures that worked for most patients. Talk therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and other rehabilitative methods are some of the proven ways. There are also medications that may be prescribed, if other symptoms or conditions are present. These should only be used if truly recommended by the experts.

Help Starts Within

You need to start by finding the right coping measures for yourself to provide full support to your child. You may experience feelings of guilt, fear, shock and disbelief. Take note that your baby is the one who needs the most attention and support at this time. Take charge of your emotions and understand the ways to improve and adjust accordingly. You can start by rearranging the home to offer safety and security for the baby, changing your schedule to provide more time for him or her and knowing the right diet, toys and other tools for independence.

Family Support

Other members of the family should also help during the most critical stages of the child’s life. Although milestones may be reached at a later age, every person in the house should contribute to boost overall wellness. If you intend to breastfeed your baby, you should ask your physician first, since babies with Down syndrome tend to have low muscle tone or hypotonia. They may have difficulty breastfeeding properly. Breastfeeding can actually help in immunity and other functions for the baby.

Siblings can take turns taking care of the baby. Other relatives can also come over to help the child improve social skills and communicating. Take your child to different venues with different people to boost its confidence. The family should coordinate well to meet the needs of the baby until it is ready to do things alone.

Taking It Slowly

The coping techniques need to be incorporated slowly for patients to deal with the challenges and learn to become independent. Do not pressure the patient so much to reach new heights and give compliments and praise for small efforts. Parents should also be kind to themselves and stop blaming the wrong reasons. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that people truly do not have any control over.

The effects and symptoms of Down syndrome usually last a lifetime so individuals and families need to be ready for these. Parents should not also stop themselves from giving birth to more kids because they have a history of the condition. Although it is not entirely impossible, a lot of parents can actually continue giving birth to normal children despite the previous one being afflicted with Down syndrome.

Diagnosing And Treating Bipolar Children

For much of the last century, the psychiatric profession considered bipolar children to be non-existent. That is, they believed that bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, occurred only in adults, even though some early researchers had evidence suggesting that a few adults had symptoms that had indeed manifested before they were ten. But manic depression treatments were pretty much exclusively designed for adults until recent years, as a result of this belief. Finding any bipolar facts about symptoms or treatments for children was difficult for a long time.

Some progress has been made, and current treatments help children more than before. But bipolar disorder can be hard to treat because so many of its symptoms overlap other disorders as well. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for example, can resemble the manic phase of manic depression. Often the only reason bipolar children with these symptoms are diagnosed is that they are more aggressive and exhibit more behavioral problems than if they had ADHD alone. All of this means that both diagnosis and finding the right medical treatments can be quite the challenge.

Anxiety disorders can also be an indicator that doctors should watch for manic depression as well, since children with these disorders are more likely also to develop bipolar disorder. Children with bipolar disorder may often have had treatment already for full-blown depressive episodes, which served as precursors for the later illness. Even irritability and hypersensitivity might be warning signs, if they last for days at a time.

Diagnosis is controversial, though, because children with bipolar disorder are much more likely to be diagnosed in the United States than in other parts of the world. Interpretations vary on whether this is because there is simply over diagnosis in the U.S., or whether US doctors are simply recognizing a problem that really exists. Bipolar info and interpretation of symptoms varies considerably from country to country.

The treatment options available for manic depression are also likely to vary between countries. Yet it’s important to settle the question about diagnosis, because if this disorder truly manifests in bipolar children, it seems to be more intense for them than for adults. Some antipsychotic drugs that are used to treat it carry the risk of liver damage, heart problems or even diabetes. But not using the drugs could put the children at increased risk of psychosis, cognitive impairment or suicide. To find the best possible treatment for these children, a correct diagnosis is crucial.

Everything You Need to Know About Laser Wart Removal

Laser hair removal, have you heard of it before?  Laser hair removal is rapidly increasing in popularity. Amazingly, laser treatment can prevent or greatly reduce the growth of body hair. If you think that is amazing, wait until you hear what else laser treatment can do.  If you suffer from warts, you may be able to have your warts eliminated with laser treatments.

Laser wart removal is done at a professional office. There are a number of dermatologists who can offer this type of treatment, but it is most commonly found in laser treatment centers. Laser treatment centers are centers that tend to focus solely on conditions that can be treated by lasers.  These conditions may include, but are not limited, unwanted body hair, poor vision, as well as warts.

As previously mentioned, your best chance for undergoing laser wart removal is to contact a local laser treatment center. If you have a primary care physician, they may be able to point you in the direction of a well-known and trusted laser treatment center.  If you do not have a primary care physician, who can provide you with recommendations, you are advised to use the internet or your local phone book.  Both of these resources should be able to provide you with the contact information of local laser treatment centers.

When it comes to undergoing a laser wart removal, there is a good chance that you may need to make a consultation appointment.  This appointment, if it is needed, will be used to fully examine your body, as well as the warts that you would like removed. If you are being referred by a dermatologist or even your family physician, it is possibly that you may not need to have a consultation appointment; however, to make that possible you should request that your doctor share all of your medical files with the laser treatment center that you plan on using. This may make it possible for your consultation appointment to be eliminated.

Consultation appointments are not only used to examine your warts, but they are also used to prepare you for the procedure.  If you are not planning on having a consultation appointment, it is important that you understand exactly how the procedure will go. You should easily be able to do this online or by speaking to your laser treatment center’s staff.  You will likely find that the laser, which is typically a pulsed dye laser, will cutoff of the wart’s blood supply. This will cause the wart to dry up and later fall off.

When it comes to laser wart removal, one of the most common questions asked is about pain.  Despite what you may believe or may have heard, laser wart removal is relatively painless and sometimes even pain-free.  Most professionals will use topical numbing gel and you may be asked to take an over-the-counter pain medication, but that is usually about it. In fact, there is a little or no complications associated with laser wart removal. It has even been said that most patients can return to their daily activities that same day.

Perhaps, the best part about laser wart removal is that it is ideal for individuals of all ages. In addition to being a great treatment option for adults, laser wart removal is also safe for children. If that weren’t enough, laser wart removal can effectively and safely remove warts from anyplace on the body.  If you would like more information on this relatively new, but popular wart removal method, you are advised to speak with a professional healthcare provider today.

Parenting Your Overweight Teen and Improving Their Self Esteem

Today, approximately 15% of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are either overweight or obese (which is a 10% increase since 1970). In fact, there are now more than 9 million youngsters who are at risk from suffering some impaired life due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels or Type 2 Diabetes, as well as having a negative self image of themselves, which will continue as they grow into adulthood.

There have been studies carried out that indicate a child who is obese at the age of 6, will have a 50% chance of becoming obese as an adult. Also, if one or both of the child’s parents are overweight, then the chances increase to 80%. These are very sobering and scary statistics for a parent whose child is overweight.

However, there is good news that, with help from the adults in their lives, these children can be helped. They can be taught healthier behaviors, which relate to both their eating habits and improving the physical activity they do, and this will help them to lose the weight.

By helping them become more selective with the types of food that they consume, and increasing the amount of physical activity that they accomplish, it will only produce positive results.

However, it should be stressed that formal dieting, and especially giving your child a severely restricted diet, should only be attempted with medical approval and the appropriate nutritional supervision. Many pediatricians believe the best course is to try and hold an overweight child’s weight at a steady level, and avoid losing large amounts of weight at a time, until such a time as their height is at a healthier proportion to their weight.

The following 4 steps will not only help to facilitate healthier eating habits, but will also increase the amount of physical activity that they do.

First Aid for Dog Bites

During my rotation in the Department of Surgery at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, I’ve encountered quite a number of lacerated wounds secondary to dog-bite referred by San Lazaro Hospital for suturing. However, we don’t advise these kinds of wounds to be sutured because they are considered dirty.

Instead, we just advise the following:

  1. Wash the bite area vigorously with soap under running water for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Apply any anti-septic like povidone iodine or 70% alcohol.
  3. Do not cover the wound with bandage of plaster.
  4. Do not put anything over the wound like pounded garlic, plant juices, coffee or chilli powder that are believe as cures. These things are nonsterile and may just result to infected wounds.
  5. Go to a nearest health center, physician or any hospital to get shots of vaccine immediately.

How effective is the Lemon Detox Diet?

admin

The lemon detox diet is one of the

Consuming anything sour makes the liver and gallbladder purge stored toxins. The liver is especially important for weight loss and overall health. When the liver is filled with toxins, it cannot do its critical tasks in metabolizing fat. So that is why it is essential to keep your liver in top working condition.

In a lemon detox diet, you use the juice of a fresh lemon in a cup of hot water in the morning. The morning is when our bodies are in a natural cleansing phase, so it is a good time to consume cleansing foods and juices.

Then, you also use either fresh lemon juice or a slice of a lemon in water that you drink throughout the day. In the lemon detox diet, water is a key component. You should drink at least 64 ounces a day.

Lemon juice provides an added benefit: it also supplies the body with a good dose of vitamin C.

But don’t use lemon juice as your sole method of cleansing or weight loss.

Although a lemon detox diet is beneficial, it will not be as effective as a more thorough detox. You will lose more weight and gain more energy by going through a more thorough detox.

In a more thorough detox, you will consume vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs that are known for their cleansing and fat-burning abilities. Fresh lemon juice is a part of a more thorough detox diet.

But most detox diets (such as Ann Louise Gittleman’s Fat Flush Diet) incorporate a detox period of at least two weeks.

This is too long!

Why?

Well, a detox requires that you deprive yourself of most of the things that you love. The longer that a diet requires you to deprive yourself, the lower the chance that you’ll STICK with it.

The optimum period for a detox diet is one week. Most people can stick to a restricted diet for that long.

Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

Physical exercise is beneficial because it helps maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.  It also makes a person feel happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety. It has also shown to make a person with an active lifestyle live longer than a person who doesn’t.

The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and make one either gain or lose weight.

A person who has never worked out before should do it gradually. Doing it too much for the first time can make one pull a muscle or have an injury making it worse. Endurance will never be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be good to the person.

Focusing on certain portion in the body can help make it improve. A good example is going to the gym and doing a workout more often in a specific area such as the abs can give one a chest pack.

How to prepare for LASIK surgery?

admin

Categories: Featured, Treatment Procedures

Preparing for any type of surgery is an unenviable and tedious process. You must make sure you have everything ready and your body in tip-top shape. While preparing for LASIK eye surgery may not be quite as difficult, there are some things you need to prepare for before LASIK.

You definitely need to stop wearing your contact lenses in the weeks leading up to your consultation before LASIK. Since the surgery is dependent on the shape and measurement of your cornea you must let it regain its shape. Lenses sometimes reshape the cornea themselves, causing problems with LASIK. Here are some FDA recommendations based on your contact lenses:

  • Soft contact lenses should be removed and not worn for at least two weeks prior to your LASIK evaluation.
  • Rigid gas permeable lenses should be removed and not worn for at least three weeks prior to LASIK evaluation.
  • Hard lenses should be removed and not worn for at least four weeks prior to LASIK evaluation.

When you meet the doctor to discuss LASIK eye surgery you should let him know a few things about yourself. Let the doctor know about any past or present medical and eye conditions as well as all medications you are taking or are allergic to. It is important that you disclose all of this to your doctor before deciding if LASIK is right for you.

Have you recently decided that you would like to have cosmetic surgery? Whether you are looking to undergo a surgical facelift, a tummy tuck, breast enlargements or reductions, or if you are looking to remove wrinkles and slow the signs of aging, you will need to find a cosmetic surgery center.

As for how you can go about finding a local cosmetic surgery center, you have a number of different options. Those options include performing a standard internet search with your location and the phrase “cosmetic surgery,” examining online business directories, using your local phone book, or asking those that you know for recommendations.

Now that you know just a few of the many ways that you can go about finding a local cosmetic surgery center, it is important to know that you need to do more than that. Finding a cosmetic surgery center just isn’t good enough; you need to choose one. Why? Because cosmetic surgery can be dangerous and tricky, especially if it is performed by someone with less than stellar qualifications and experience.

So, what should you look for in a quality cosmetic surgery center? For starters, you will want to examine location. Those who wish to undergo cosmetic surgery either go two ways. One, they want to find a local surgery center that is easy and convenient to visit. Second, they want to find the cheapest cosmetic surgery center, even if it means traveling abroad. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find a top-notch cosmetic surgeon within an hour or two of your home.

When looking to choose a cosmetic surgery center, the procedures performed should be examined. What is nice about choosing a cosmetic surgery center, as opposed to one surgeon with a private practice is that you often gain access to the most services and procedures. A cosmetic surgery center is likely to perform a wide range of procedures, even those that involve the use of lasers. With that said, be sure to call ahead and verify first. Also, know that if you are looking to improve your smile, by way of your teeth, a cosmetic dentist should be visited.
