What is rabies?

It is caused by a virus which medical experts describe as “neurotropic” because of its attraction to nerve tissues.  Once the virus has found its way into the cell tissue of a host, it turns into a highly prolific producer.  The virus is transmitted to man by the bit of rabid animals.

Who can get rabies?

Anyone can get rabies.  However, cases are highly seen in developing countries because mainly of poor control of stray dogs and cats and poor vaccination of dogs.  Incidence was noted higher in children below 15 years old.

Are dogs the only rabies carrier?

Dogs aren’t the only carriers of rabies.  The main carriers are bats.  Rabies is also carried by cattle, cats, swine, monkeys and even human being who had been bitten by rabid animals.  It is reportedly “extremely rare” in squirrels, rats and mice.

They say the dog’s saliva is curative, is it safe to let my pet lick my wounds?

Some people believe that the saliva of dogs has some curative properties and they encourage their pets to lick their wounds.  This practice is extremely dangerous, no matter how you religiously immunize your pet.

I was bitten by a dog, what should I do?

The following first aid measures should be followed by a person bitten  by a dog or any animal assumed to be rabid.

  • Scrub the wound or bitten area with soap and detergent and under running tap (water) for at least five minutes.
  • Remove any foreign material from the site as this may also lead to infection.
  • Rinse with plain water; and
  • Irrigate with a viricidal agent such as alcohol or povidone iodine.

Then be sure to consult a physician immediately for appropriate preventive measures. These practices should also be applied to those licked wounds, especially the open ones.

Who can be given rabies vaccine?

Anyone who was bitten by a dog or a rabid animal should receive vaccine, especially in areas where there are high cases of rabies.  Further, victims of dog bites in the dangerous sites such as the head, neck, face, fingertips and back should immediately be given rabies vaccine.  The nearer the site of the bite to the brain, the faster the movement of the virus.

What are the symptoms of rabies?

Symptoms may include nausea, a slight headache which is usually accompanied by fever, and a feeling of fatigue, lasting from two to three days or even more from the time of inception.  But once the virus reaches the brain and starts to “colonize,” it tortures its victim with terrifying ferocity.

A rabid patient often become maniacal… An excessive flow of thick saliva pours over his face and neck and becomes smeared on hands and clothes and over the bedding and floor…Convulsions are brought about by the least irritation and by the slightest current of air.  When the patient attempts to drink, there is an immediate viselike contraction of the muscles of deglutition  with an excruciatingly painful spasm of the glottis and the pharynx.  The body trembles with convulsive movements, the jaws are clenched, respiration is impossible.  As a rule, death occurs after two or three days from cardiac or respiratory failure.

Trashing tobacco out of one’s system improves health.  Here’s what happens when a smoker quits after:

  • 20 minutes, blood pressure and pulse rate returns to normal.  Circulation in hands and feet improves.
  • 8 hours, oxygen levels in blood return to normal.  Chances of heart attack begin to fall.
  • 24 hours, carbon monoxide is eliminated from the body.  The lung starts to clear out mucus.
  • 48 hours, nicotine is no longer detectable in the body.  The ability to taste and smell improves.
  • 72 hours, breathing becomes easier as the bronchial tubes relax.  Energy levels increase.
  • 2-12 weeks, walking becomes easier as circulation improves throughout the body.
  • 3-9 months, breathing improves as coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing incidence decline.  Lung function increases by 5-10 percent.
  • 5 years, risk of heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
  • 10 years, it’s like you never smoked as risk of heart attack falls to about the same as that of a non-smoker.  Risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

Indeed, the only quitters to win are the smokers.

How to care for puncture wounds?

A puncture wound - such as stepping on a nail - doesn’t usually result in excessive bleeding. Often, in fact, little blood will flow and the wound seems to close almost instantly.  But these features doesn’t mean that treatment is unnecessary.

A puncture wound can be dangerous because of the risk of infection.  The object that caused the wound may carry tetanus spores or other bacteria, especially if it has been exposed to soil.

If you sustain a puncture wound, see a doctor to have the wound thoroughly cleaned.  As a precaution, you may need a tetanus shot.

Skipping breakfast may lead to teenage obesity!

Didn’t we always hear our mothers reminding us (or even nagging us at times) that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that it shouldn’t be skipped. I could pretty much relate to breakfast skipper.  I have been depriving myself of hearty breakfast (for four years) ever since I entered medical school.  I usually start my day with only a cup of coffee and two slices of bread, especially if I have only minutes to get prepared for hospital duties and school. I am a late riser so I am always having an early morning rush. My mother would always remind me that it is a healthy way to start my day and she’s been right.

In a U.S. study, skipping breakfast was found out unhealthy and is linked to teen obesity.

Teens who ate breakfast daily have a healthier diet overall and were more physically active than teens who skipped breakfast.  A five-year follow up was done showing consistent results with breakfast skippers gaining more weight also.

So always have a healthy breakfast.  Aside from preventing obesity, breakfasts energizes your day.

Introducing: The Blood Pressure Vaccine

Blood Pressure Vaccine

Reuters reported that A vaccine (AngQb) that targets angiotensin II appears to be safe and effective in reducing blood pressure in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension, according to results of a phase II study reported in the March 8th issue of The Lancet.

Lifestyle interventions and drug therapy are the mainstays of treatment for hypertension, but both require patient compliance to be effective, Dr. Ola Samuelsson and Dr. Hans Herlitz, from the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden, write in a related editorial. “If vaccination against high blood pressure were safe and effective in the long run, it might solve many problems of non-compliance.”

The current study involved 72 patients with mild-to-moderate high blood pressure who were randomized to receive AngQb, at one of two doses, or placebo at weeks 0, 4, and 12. The main focus was on safety and tolerability, but 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure was assessed prior to treatment and at week 14, note senior author Dr. Martin F. Bachmann, from Cytos Biotechnology AG in Zurich-Schlieren, Switzerland, and colleagues.

Five patients dropped out of the study and were excluded from the efficacy analysis: two of these patients given AngQb 100 micrograms and three given AngQb 300 micrograms.

How to have your children get a good night’s rest?

admin

On March 07, 2008
Categories: Child Care, Parenting

At night, while parents extend their work at home under bright artificial lights, little kids also lose their sense of a relaxed home. Their stress may be expressed in the form of irritability, crying, bed wetting, and misbehavior.

Here are some tips on how to have your children get a good night’s sleep:

1. Feed your children right. Children get poor sleep with stomach discomforts. Thus, they often wake up and cry at night. To avoid this, feed them with light, easily digestible, carbohydrate-rich food before sunset. Ripe banana of any variety is suggested because it contains serotonin and potassium that induce sound sleep. Children need light stomachs to sleep comfortably. Feeding them while tired or drowsy at late night may lead to indigestion, flatulence and discomfort.

2. Dedicate an early evening time with your kids. As soon as you get home from work, spend time (between 6 and 8 p.m.) with your family. Tag this period as “family time.” Attend to their needs and play with them in a variety of creative, less active endeavors both indoor and outdoor. Make this schedule regular and consistent.

3. Establish prebedtime routines at an early age. After family time, help your kids prepare their bottles, brush their teeth, empty their bladder, wash their face and body, change to their sleep clothes, and set their beddings. Massage them or simply tap them lightly for physical and nervous relaxation. This pattern will eventually become normal and spontaneous as they grow up. Likewise, such routines cue them to get to bed right away and condition them for a comfortable peaceful sleep.

4. Pray as a family before going to bed. Train your kids to say short prayers. Praying makes them feel safe knowing they have asked God to watch over them. Praying also instills int heir young minds faith and trust in God.

Black Tea can help fight diabetes

A recent study published in the Aging Cell journal found out that certain ingredients in black tea could act as an insulin substitute and might help prevent type 2 diabetes. Several components of black tea - called theaflavins and thearubigins can mimic the action of insulin and we know that lack of insulin production leads to diabetes.

The researchers advise that diabetics shouldn’t be rushing to drink masses of black tea thinking it will cure them of diabetes. Their research into tea compounds is at a preclinical, experimental stage and people with diabetes should continue to take their medication as directed by their doctor.
