The Ultimate Basement Remodel For Guys

I like home improvement and maintenance. Now that it is winter and I don’t have to work on the lawn and landscape during my day off, it is to get into something a little more meaty: the basement. So I needed to come up with a plan to turn it into the ultimate “Man Land.”

If you are looking for some ideas on creating the ultimate basement habitat, these tips will help you for sure.

1) Choose the location of the TV. Look guys, without a television, the basement is pretty much just a big storage area. You should not skimp on this and spring for the full plasma high definition set and mount it directly on the wall in the very center of the room. If you really get crafty, you can buy smaller, 32″ flat screens to go on either side of your main set. This way you can wire up the cable or satellite to show 3 or 4 games at any given time. Now that is viewing pleasure!

2) It is also a nice idea to have a sink and refrigerator in the basement so you don’t have to run upstairs during important sporting events. Some of you may decide to go the extra mile and install a wet bar with granite counter tops and spot lights. This will create the perfect mood for watching NASCAR on Sunday.

3) Since you are putting in a wet bar, it is also a good idea go ahead and add in a bathroom down there too. After all, we wouldn’t want to have to bother running upstairs just to use the restroom. Be sure to also put in an extra large sink to double as a bar accessory washing station.

4) Finally, you need to choose the theme of the room by adding fine art prints on the walls. Everyone’s definition of fine art is different, but I am thinking the classic “Dogs Playing Poker” would be a great start. You may want to go a little more sophisticated, however, and get some framed prints from The New Yorker Cover or other print medium. Finally, you could just spread some whimsy with pictures of funny cartoons. It all works, just make sure to reflect your own style.

I hope these easy to follow tips will motivate you to get downstairs, clean out those cobwebs, and get that basement in shape. If you hurry, you can have it all done before the big game this Sunday night! Invite your friends, have a party, and enjoy your Man Land.

Orthotic Shoe Inserts and Their Role in Treating Flat Feet In Children

Flat feet in children is commonly tough to detect in the early months, since baby fat often hides the true shape of the foot. With the passage of time and as the baby enters walking stage, the condition becomes more obvious. As the child ages, a normal arch should appear between four and six years of age, commonly being developed by walking barefoot on irregular terrain. This develops tendons, muscles, and ligaments. If a normal arch fails to appear during this development stage, then it may be necessary to investigate the use of orthotic insoles to keep lower body or back issues from emerging in later years.

Pronation –the excessive rolling inwards of the ankles and feet, and ensuing breakdown of the arches– is found in up to seventy percent of the population. Over a period of time, excessive pronation in addition to foot pain will also cause back problems, and also leg problems. Many people fail to comprehend how correct foot, leg and back alignment are connected, and it is critical to correct any foot problems such as flat feet in children to prevent further lower body health complications.

It is recommended to become aware of flat feet in children as soon as possible to prevent ensuing complications later in life. While sometimes it is a normal part of aging, it is possible for adults of any age to develop flat feet. Flat feet may be brought about for reasons such as illness, injury, or pregnancy, and can be temporary or permanent, depending on the reason. Excess weight can also cause flat feet in adults or children.

You can test whether a foot arch is developing is by using a wet blotter. With this technique, you make a footprint of your child’s damp foot on colored paper. Then you check whether the footprint leaves a visible gap left by the foot arch. You can also do this on a beach, or in a sandbox by examining the footprint, however the blotter test is much more helpful. Another symptom of flat feet is when the child complains about his or her calf muscles or ankles ache after walking for a period of time, as flat feet in children can cause added strain on ankles and calves to offset the lack of foot arches. In some cases, a youngster may walk on the external edges of his feet, and this is often confused with bowleggedness, when in reality it is a consequence of over-pronation caused by flat feet.

Foot disorders such as flat feet in children can be corrected to prevent serious complications like plantar fasciitis and avoid damage to other lower body parts. A recommended measure of prevention is through the use of orthotic insoles. A foot specialist (podiatrist) should be able to analyze the symptoms and recommend suitable treatment, which could include orthotic insoles or foot exercises, depending on the severity of the problem. In many cases, standard orthotic insoles products available at retail stores or on the Internet, can produce excellent results, precluding the need for high-priced custom-made orthotic insoles or other aids available via prescription.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to flat feet in children is that early detection can prevent many serious complications to other body parts such as the knees and lower back over time. It is easy to treat flat feet in children through readily available and affordable orthotic insoles.

To eliminate stretch marks completely can be very challenging for many individuals. You once had healthy skin and now you have these unsightly marks that you don’t know how to get rid of. As you got older the skin’s vitality loses its elasticty and skin tone. Each and everyday the body creates healthy new cells to replace some of the older ones. To ensure that one maintains healthy looking skin a proper prevention and a healthy lifestyle are keys.

After knowing how important our skin is to us and taking the time to care for it the proper way, you begin to notice lines. These lines are usually formed around the mid section, arms and butts. It is said that more women are the target of stretch marks but many men have them also. Stretch marks do not even come in one color. Some are a purple color, some are red and some are white or silver.

Okay it is now time for you to eliminate stretch marks for good. You pick up the phone and call the doctor to make an appointment for a consultation. You want a laser for stretch marks treatment and you are not giving up until these unsightly lines are forever gone. In choosing a doctor make sure you do your research. Make a list before going for the consultation so you do not forget any important questions.

Your doctor will explain the advantages and disadvantages of laser surgery. You will also hear the news that the red and purple stretch marks will be easier to remove than the white or silver ones. You will be shown how a beam of light used on the stretch marks will help the skin produce brand new cells along with collagen and new tissue. After awhile you will never even know the stretch mark were there. While it is said that laser for stretch marks is pretty painless there have been some patients that have complained of discomfort which can be easily be taken care of with a mild pain reliever prescribed by your surgeon.

Do not expect miracles on your first visit. You have developed stretch marks over the past years of your life, and they are unlikely to be gone on the first visit to your doctor. Only your doctor can help you determine how long it will take to eventually get rid of all your stretch marks. Every individual will likely have different results. Having laser surgery during the cooler months can be a better option. It will allow you to be ready for the warmer summer months where you can show off your new healthy skin.

Now is the time for you to take action to eliminate stretch marks for good and stop them from plaguing your life once and for all. Laser surgery for stretch marks can really make a difference in your life and give you back the confidence you once had.

Last Week I Stumbled Upon Many Children’s Behaviour Issues

Yesterday I was asked to do some S.E.O work for a site focusing solely on social emotional development.

And I was a tad thrown by the subject-matter. Whenever I begin a task like this, I look around for other keyword terms, I read the sites content, and generally make myself familiar with the subject-matter.

I am forty one now, and this kind of thing just wasn’t talked about when I was growing up (man, I sound old), but I am so glad it is now. Growing up in Sheffield was pretty tough, and there were a lot of one parent families emerging from out of nowhere it would seem.

My parents were divorced when I was 13, and I am so pleased they did. Why should they be unhappy just to make mine and my sisters lives seemingly improved.

Hundreds of people tell me that they have stayed together for the sake of their kids, and this makes me so mad. What! Is your life at an end now? Is your happiness at an end because you have a child with someone you no longer care to be with?

Kids are resilient, and strong, and can spot these things anyway, so why not sit down and have a chat with them. You might just get a pleasant surprise, or you could be wrong, but one thing is for sure…if you don’t talk about it, you’ll never know.

Life is way too short, procrastination is a wonderful thing, and one that can suck time & life away from you without you even knowing it. Don’t let it.

Searching for keyword terms on this site, is what made me start thinking about these things, search terms like social emotional aspects learning

Fascinating stuff, and food for thought I guess, but then the WWW is supposed to be about thr passing of information, and not buying health supplements and small blue pills.

Or is that just my inbox?

Get Helpful Tips About DNA Paternity Testing of Related Potential Fathers

123

Categories: Parenting

DNA paternity testing of related potential fathers is not uncommon, although paternity in such cases is more difficult to prove beyond doubt. It is frequently possible if the relationship is known prior to testing, though in some such cases other evidence is generally required before paternity can be legally ascertained.

While positive DNA tests can be accepted as positive evidence of paternity in the vast majority of cases due the statistical improbability of potential fathers having the same DNA profiles, the situation is complicated if the possible fathers are related. It isn’t uncommon for brothers to be involved in a parentage dispute, or even for the mother to have the DNA test carried out privately to determine which is the father of her child.

In normal paternity disputes, whether or not DNA profiling is acceptable as the sole evidence depends upon the circumstances of the case, and it is generally wise to be able to prove the likelihood, or even just the possibility, of the mother and the possible father coming into contact with one another. In Islamic law a paternity test is not sufficient, and other evidence, preferably that of witnesses, is necessary.

The Legal Aspects

Where DNA paternity testing is to be used in evidence, courts will generally insist on a legal paternity test where the collection of the sampling is carried out by an authorized professional and the identity of the subject legally determined. Home DNA testing, or DNA tests on samples presented by the subject, is not admissible as evidence. The probability of paternity accepted as definitive proof varies from state to state, although a probability of 99% would seem reasonable where there is no doubt as to the source of the sample, and where no complications such as rape are involved.

The fact that parentage has been discounted in 99 men in 100 is a more positive identification of the father where there are limited possibilities than were the father potentially any individual in the general population such as occurs with rape. In that case a probability of 99.9% or higher would be more definite, together with additional proof of the likelihood of the suspect being in the vicinity.

Such probability is determined largely by the accuracy of the test that depends upon both the way it is carried out and the number of DNA indicators used (a good average would be 16), and is frequently as high as 99.99% or more. It also depends on whether the sample of the Mother is included in the testing or not, as this will help to obtain a much higher level of probability.

Common DNA between Family Members

DNA tests on related potential fathers are no different from those carried out on any other subject: it is the results that could potentially create problems. Take the case of first cousins: they share 12.5% of their DNA and so it will be more difficult to prove parentage. This sharing of DNA increases to 25% for uncles, nephews and half-brothers, and to 50% for sons, fathers and brothers of the person being tested.

DNA paternity testing on different members of the same family is not an uncommon situation, and can occur for a number of reasons, including:

a) Parentage of pregnancies arising from consensual and non-consensual relationships, although the former is by far the more common of the two.
b) Two family members each claiming parentage, whether or not the mother is claiming one or neither to be the father.
c) A brother desiring confirmation that he is the parent.
d) The mother, or potential mother, having a private test to assure herself as to who is the father.
e) A grown child confirming parentage, particularly where an inheritance could be involved.

There are others, but these are common reasons for legal and home DNA tests being carried out where potential fathers could be related. Standard DNA paternity testing statistics are based upon unrelated members of the public, and unless the laboratory carrying out the DNA testing has been informed of the relationship, the test results could be misinterpreted.

The Case of Identical Twins

Nevertheless, it is possible to test additional DNA markers if any of the above relationships are known, but not in one specific case. This is the case of identical twins. Normal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized by two sperm, and are no more alike genetically than were they siblings born years apart. Identical twins, however, are formed when one egg is fertilized by one sperm and then splits into two halves within the first 14 days for no known reason.

These twins share an identical genetic make-up and so their DNA is identical and indistinguishable from one another. There is no test that can determine which is the biological father of a child. Unless one is excluded for some reason, either could be the father and that is all that DNA testing can prove. The court would have to disregard DNA results and use other means to determine paternity.

Old-fashioned policing, therefore, still has a part to play where the related potential fathers are identical twins. Apart from this specific case, DNA paternity tests are not entirely foolproof since they rely on probability, but are virtually conclusive where you simply want confirmation of paternity. In such a case, a likelihood of 1 in a 1000 is a virtual certainty and where confirmation is required between a limited number of candidates, a 99.9% DNA genetic testing result is legal confirmation.

Looking for divorce records or maybe you’d like to check someone’s criminal history? Look no further.

Bulging Disc Neurosurgery – When To Consider Surgery, and When To Consider Alternatives

123
Written by admin
On February 11, 2009
Categories: Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

Disc Back Surgery can be a very ominous thing to consider, especially because of all the conflicting information available. There are definitely some instances where herniated disc back surgery is necessary, but many times, this is not the case.

In fact, much of the research available today indicates that the success rate of surgery for a herniated disc is not very good, and rarely provides lasting relief (in most cases, the pain comes back within 5 years).

This article will discuss the different options available for surgery for a herniated disc, but before we cover that, we need to discuss what a herniated disc is.

The discs of the spine are cushions that separate each set of bones in the back. Their primary purpose is to act as shock-absorbers, protecting the vertebrae from excessive wear and tear with motion.

Each disc is composed of a strong outer covering called the annulus, and a soft jelly center called the nucleus. In the case of a herniated disc, the annulus becomes weak and tears. This causes the jelly to shift from the center of the disc into the area of weakness, which causes the disc to bulge.

The most serious complication of this problem is that the nerves of the spine are located directly behind each disc of the spine, which is where the disc will tend to bulge if it is injured. Because of this, the herniated disc will tend to apply pressure on a nerve, which can result in a great deal of disability and pain.

In fact, an interesting fact about the discs of the spine that you may not be aware of is that they are not able to feel pain sensations. This may sound odd to you at first, because as you know, this can be a very painful problem to deal with.

But if you think about it, it makes sense that a disc wouldn’t feel pain, because they are absorbing shock all day. If they could feel pain, you would be in pain all the time, with every movement you make!

So, what actually causes the pain in the case of a herniated disc? It’s actually the pressure on the affected nerve. Even more significant than the pain, though, is the other parts of the body that can be affected by this problem.

Because the nerves of the spine control everything in the body, pressure on a nerve will cause the part of the body being controlled by that nerve to stop functioning normally.

A good example of this would be a herniated disc in the lower back. The nerves that would be affected here control the legs, so it’s very common for an individual with this condition to experience pain radiating down the legs, as well as weakness in the legs.

I’ve even seen cases where the pressure on the nerves in the low back becomes so strong that an individual literally drops to their knees because they’ve lost so much strength in their legs.

Now, before we discuss the different types of bulging disc surgery available, let me just say one thing, because people often ask if there is a way for them to tell if surgery is their only option, and there is.

There are only a couple of circumstances that actually call for surgery right away. The first is if you have a herniated disc in your low back, and you are losing control of your bowel and/or bladder. This is very serious and usually requires surgery immediately.

The other situation that usually requires surgery is when an individual begins to have weakness in the extremities (either the arms or legs). This is a sign that the nerves have enough pressure on them that they are beginning to fall asleep. This is also a very serious sign.

One thing I should say about that second situation, though, is that the weakness I’m referring to is an objective weakness that a physician can only find through a proper examination. You may feel like you are experiencing weakness, but unless it shows up on the exam, it may not be serious enough to consider surgery.

In other words, your physician is the only one who will know if you have a true weakness that requires surgery.

Now let’s discuss the different types of surgery for a herniated disc commonly used today. Although there is a lot of new research in this field, the two most commonly used forms of surgery involve either removing the bulging part of the disc to remove the pressure from the nerve, or removing the entire disc and fusing the bones above and below the disc together.

With both of these types of surgery, the success rate is very low – only about 16% according to the medical journal Spine. Also, these often lead to other complications in the future. With a fusion, the joints above and below the fusion have to work extra hard to make up for the lack of motion, so those joints tend to wear out more quickly, and the problem will eventually spread throughout the spine.

In the case of a disc resection, where they remove the part of the disc that is bulging, the condition usually comes back within 5 years, because if you are removing a part of the disc, it creates a weakness in the disc, and also causes scar tissue to develop over time.

Many people ask me about disc replacement back surgery, and other recent discoveries in this field, but at this moment in time, these forms of surgery are not as commonly used. I believe there is a lot of potential in this field, but they really haven’t perfected this technology yet.

So, here’s the bottom line with surgery for a herniated disc – always view this as a last resort. The success rate is not very good, and unless you fit into one of the situations that absolutely requires surgery, you should try everything else available first.

So, what other options do you have? After working with thousands of individuals with this problem, I have actually found that there are a number of treatments that are very helpful, and can truly lead to lasting results.

I’ve actually found that it’s a combination of treatments that lead to the best results. If you are interested in avoiding surgery for a herniated disc, and would like to know more about the combination of treatments that are most effective for healing a herniated disc, you can click here (surgery for a herniated disc) to get all the details.

What You Need To Know About Ovarian Cyst Treatment

123
Written by admin
On February 09, 2009
Categories: Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

A physician usually determines the kind of treatment based on the type of ovarian cyst. The pain a woman is having with her ovarian cyst and whether or not she is pre or post menopausal also are very important before deciding on a line of treatment.

If the woman is pre-menopausal, and not in any or very much pain, and the cyst is a typical functional cyst, then the physician may recommend just monitoring the cyst with no external action. Many times the ovarian cyst will simply go away by itself. Doctor’s often do not recommend surgery for patients who are in little pain and do not have an abnormal cyst.

However, if the ovary is twisted (what is called torsion) because of the cyst and is blocking blood flow or creates a high likelyhood of the cyst rupturing, there is a good chance that a physician will recommend surgery to remove complications brought on by the torsion.

Usually, however, if there are no complications and there is very little pain, surgery is almost never recommended.

When surgery is recommended, there are some situations that will impact the type of surgery required. For example, if a woman is post menopausal and there are cancer cells found on the ovaries, then the physician will often recomment the removal of the ovary. In situations where there is no cancer, then if surgery is recommended, it will usually be done to remove the cyst and not the ovary.

Sometimes, if the cyst should grow very large, damage can be done to the ovary by the cyst and in those cases, the doctor may recommend the removal of the ovary, too.

There is typically little effect on the health of a woman to have an ovary removed, should it be necessary. One ovary is sufficient to become pregnant if the patient is pre-menopausal.

ovarian cyst treatment with surgery usually means a cystectomy using a laparoscopy, which is an instrument somewhat like a little telescope with a fiber optic system that brings light into the abdomen. It’s about 12 inches long and is the thickness of a fountain pen. As part of the surgical procedure, the laparoscopy opens up the cyst to aspirate it and then afterwards removes it. The laparoscopy is inserted through a small incision made in the pelvic area into the abdomen.

The surgeons typically try to leave as much healthy tissue in the ovaries as possible so as not to damage the patient’s reproductive system.
Surgery is hard on the body and in many cases has an effect on a woman’s ability to reproduce. On the other hand, a holistic approach to ovarian cyst treatment is good for the body and tackles the problem of ovarian cysts by dealing with the cause of ovarian cysts.

The holistic methods of treatment which offer natural cures for ovarian cysts are not meant to replace your physician’s advice. However, surgical remedies seldom actually treat the underlying cause of ovarian cysts, whereas a holistic approach will.

Some of the recommendations of a holistic treatment are to reduce your intake of methyl-xanthines, reduce your intake of red-meats since they are estrogenic foods, stop eating fried foods and processed foods, try to include one soy product daily and make sure you are getting adequate amounts of vitamin A, E and C as well as iron and zinc.

Of course, there are far more recommendations than just this. This is the tip of the iceberg of holistic treatment which can restore you to health again.

Guest Blogger: Ronnie Nijmeh of ACQYR.com

Don’t you hate those “everything-go-wrong” days? You know the days, where you feel like you should just go back to bed and start over again! We all have them and many times we simply give into the negative emotions or thoughts that run through our head, allowing for the day to continue on this negative path.

Did you know that you can turn any day around and make it as great as it possibly can be? You don’t have to wait for any outside influences to make the day better for you, instead you can do it for yourself.

Watch this positive affirmation video below for a boost:

Affirmations For Those Tough Days

Positive affirmations are a great tool that can help you get through any day, no matter how tough. Affirmations are basically positive statements that encapsulate your ideals for the way that you want to feel. Words have power and you can use this power to help you move past the negative aspects of any day, no matter how bad. When you use these statements during those tough times, you’ll replace negative thought with positive thought and you’ll instantly feel better.

There are a lot of great positive affirmations that you can draw positive thought from. Many people have their own list of affirmations that they memorize or have written down so in those moments when they are ready to just go back to bed or allow for the negative experiences to take over they can call on the positive thought and change the influence from positive to negative.

When you are having a bad day you can say to yourself: “No one can steal my joy. It is mine to give, to share, and to enjoy.”

This is just one example of a positive affirmation that you can repeat to yourself today. As you can see, these are very simple to memorize so that when you are having a hard time you have a positive thought to dwell on instead of just negative thought.

You may want to use affirmations every day so you can train your brain for success. One thing to keep in mind when you use affirmations is that the more you use them, or reaffirm them, the more power that they have.

If you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, try using the power of positive affirmations to alter the course of your day. You’ll be impressed by the power that words have on your frame of mind. When you replace a negative thought with a positive one you can turn a bad day into a not so bad day in just one breath.

Using positive affirmations is a great way to ensure that you always have positive thought to draw on. Many of us wait for someone or something to cheer us up or brighten our day, but when you use positive affirmations you can do this for yourself. You’ll feel great when you are able to change the direction of your day, especially when it is as simple as saying something aloud.

Here are 7 Simple Affirmations to make it through the day:

  • I feel no need to create obstacles for myself. I move forward, stronger than ever.
  • My resilience and calmness inoculate me from external pressures.
  • I fully let go of trying to remember everything. It feels good to write down important items for safe keeping.
  • My mind is focused and attentive to my tasks. I do not allow distractions to infiltrate my thoughts.
  • Situations do not control me.
  • A little pressure is the lift I need to hurdle over limitations and expectations.
  • I release myself from worry when priorities change. I use that time to accommodate more pressing needs.

How Calories Burn

It’s funny how it is so easy to gain weight but to lose the pounds requires so much hard work. The rate your body burns calories gets slower as you age.

After a certain age, metabolic activities decrease leading to weight gain. People who come to this stage in their lives find it getting harder to lose the added pounds. The only way to deal with this problem is to increase your metabolism so that you can burn more calories. This is something that must be done consistently. The more fat burned, the more the weight loss.

If we continue to eat without working out to burn off the excess calories, naturally, weight gain will follow.
